Twenty-five years later, it’s still difficult to fathom the scope and lasting impact of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives when hijacked passenger planes crashed into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in rural Pennsylvania.

As fear and uncertainty spread, all air traffic was grounded or diverted. In the midst of the crisis, one small Canadian community became a beacon of hope. When dozens of international flights were redirected to Gander, Newfoundland, the town welcomed thousands of stranded passengers, opening their homes, sharing their food and caring for complete strangers like family, forging friendships that endure to this day.
